Competency 3 - Positive Self-Evaluation

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Cognitive Competencies: Self-Awareness

Specific Competence: Positive self-evaluation - Maintaining a positive view of oneself and one's abilities.

Statement: Positive self-evaluation involves recognising and affirming your strengths and abilities while maintaining a realistic view of areas for improvement. This skill is crucial for building self-esteem and resilience.

Part A: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop positive self-evaluation by recognising and affirming your strengths and abilities.

Instructions:

A) Start by Yourself:

  • Take a moment in silence with a pen and paper. Write down three things you like about yourself. These can be personality traits, skills, or accomplishments.
  • Reflect on how these positive attributes have helped you in different areas of your life. Consider how they contribute to your personal and professional success.
  • Use the strengths you identified in Competency 1 and the critical thinking skills from Competency 2 to further affirm your positive qualities. Think about how these strengths support your positive self-evaluation.

B) Take It Further:

  • Keep a daily or weekly journal where you note down positive feedback you receive, achievements, and moments you felt proud of yourself. This helps reinforce a positive self-view over time.

Tips:

  • Be honest and specific in your reflections.
  • Focus on positive affirmations and avoid self-criticism during this exercise.
  • Regularly revisit and update your list to keep it current and relevant.

Benefits:

  • Builds self-esteem and confidence.
  • Enhances resilience and the ability to cope with challenges.
  • Encourages a balanced and realistic view of oneself.

Part B: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop positive self-evaluation together by recognising and affirming each other’s strengths and abilities.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Gather with a family member, friend, or small group. Take turns sharing three things you like about yourself. Be open and honest in your sharing.
  • Provide positive feedback to each other. Highlight the strengths and abilities you see in the other person and how they positively impact your relationship and their life.

B) Make It Fun:

  • Turn it into a game: "Compliment Circle." Sit in a circle and take turns giving each other compliments. Focus on specific strengths and abilities you appreciate in each person.
  • Create a "Positive Board" where everyone can write or draw things they like about themselves and others. Display it in a common area as a daily reminder of each person’s positive qualities.

Reflect Together:

  • After the activity, reflect on how receiving and giving positive feedback made you feel. Discuss how you can continue to support each other in maintaining a positive self-view.
  • Encourage each other to keep a journal of positive feedback and achievements to reinforce positive self-evaluation over time.
  • Use the strengths identified in Competency 1 and the critical thinking skills from Competency 2 to give more meaningful and constructive feedback.

Tips:

  • Be genuine and specific in your compliments and feedback.
  • Encourage a positive and supportive atmosphere during the activity.
  • Celebrate each other’s strengths and successes regularly.

Benefits:

  • Enhances mutual understanding and support.
  • Builds self-esteem and confidence within the group.
  • Strengthens relationships through shared positivity and encouragement.
