Competency 5 - Impulsivity Management

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Cognitive Competencies: Self-Regulation

Specific Competence: Impulsivity management - Controlling your impulses and thinking before acting.

Statement: Impulsivity management involves recognising and controlling your impulses, allowing you to think before acting. This skill helps you make more thoughtful decisions and reduces the likelihood of conflicts and regrettable actions.

Part A: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop impulsivity management by recognising and controlling your impulses.

Instructions:

A) Start by Yourself:

  • Take a moment in silence with a pen and paper. Reflect on a recent situation where you successfully managed your impulse. What triggered the impulse and what strategies did you use to control it? How did it affect the outcome?
  • Write down the situation and identify the strengths you used from Competency 1 (Self-Knowledge), your critical thinking skills from Competency 2 (Critical Thinking), your positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, and your mindful awareness from Competency 4.

B) Take It Further:

  • Practice pause-and-think moments. Before reacting to a situation, take a deep breath and count to five. This brief pause can give you time to consider your actions and their consequences.
  • Use mindfulness techniques to stay present and aware of your impulses. This can help you catch impulsive urges before they translate into actions.

Tips:

  • Be patient with yourself as you practice managing impulsivity. It’s a skill that develops over time.
  • Regularly reflect on impulsive moments and think about how you can handle them better in the future.
  • Use your identified strengths to support your efforts in managing impulses.

Benefits:

  • Reduces the likelihood of conflicts and regrettable actions.
  • Enhances decision-making and self-control.
  • Encourages thoughtful and deliberate responses to situations.

Part B: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop impulsivity management together by recognising and controlling impulses as a group.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Gather with a family member, friend, or small group. Share a recent situation where you successfully managed your impulse. Discuss what triggered the impulse and what strategies you used to control it.
  • Take turns brainstorming alternative ways to respond to similar situations in the future. Use your strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, and mindful awareness from Competency 4 to guide your discussions.

B) Make It Fun:

  • Turn it into a role-play activity. Act out common impulsive situations (e.g., interrupting someone, making a hasty decision) and practice alternative responses. This can be a fun way to explore different ways to manage impulses.
  • Create a “Pause Jar.” Write down different impulsive scenarios on slips of paper and place them in a jar. Take turns drawing a scenario and discussing how to handle it thoughtfully.

Reflect Together:

  • After sharing and role-playing, reflect on what you learned about managing impulses. Discuss how the strategies you practiced can be applied in real life.
  • Encourage each other to use the strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking skills from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, and mindful awareness from Competency 4 to manage impulses effectively.

Tips:

  • Foster a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere during discussions and role-plays.
  • Be open to feedback and suggestions from others.
  • Celebrate each other’s progress and efforts in managing impulsivity.

Benefits:

  • Promotes mutual understanding and support.
  • Enhances group cohesion and collaboration.
  • Strengthens relationships through shared learning and growth.
