Competency 6 - Goal Achievement Skills

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Cognitive Competencies: Self-Regulation

Specific Competency: Goal achievement skills - Setting and working towards achievable goals.

Statement: Goal achievement skills involve setting realistic, achievable goals and systematically working towards them. This competency helps you stay focused, motivated, and on track to reach your personal and professional objectives.

Part A: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop goal achievement skills by setting and working towards achievable goals.

Instructions:

A) Start by Yourself:

  • Take a moment in silence with a pen and paper. Reflect on a goal you would like to achieve during the summer holidays. Make sure it is SMARTER (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time-bound, Exciting, Relevant).
  • Write down your goal and break it into smaller, manageable steps. Identify any potential obstacles and think about strategies to overcome them.
  • Reflect on how your strengths from Competency 1 (Self-Knowledge), critical thinking skills from Competency 2 (Critical Thinking), positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, and impulsivity management from Competency 5 can support you in achieving this goal.

B) Take It Further:

  • Create a timeline for your goal with specific deadlines for each step. Track your progress regularly and adjust your plan as needed.
  • Use a journal or digital app to keep track of your progress, celebrate small victories, and reflect on any challenges you encounter.

Tips:

  • Be realistic and flexible with your goals. Adjust them as needed based on your progress and circumstances.
  • Celebrate small achievements along the way to stay motivated.
  • Use your identified strengths to support your goal-setting and achievement process.

Benefits:

  • Provides clarity and direction in your efforts.
  • Enhances motivation and focus.
  • Increases the likelihood of achieving your desired outcomes.

Part B: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop goal achievement skills together by setting and working towards goals as a group.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Gather with your partner, family, or friends. Each person should share a goal they want to achieve during the summer holidays. Discuss the goal and break it into smaller, manageable steps together.
  • Offer feedback and suggestions to each other on how to achieve the goals. Use your strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, and impulsivity management from Competency 5 to support each other's goal achievement process.

B) Be Realistic and Mindful:

  • Remember that everyone is on vacation. Set realistic and achievable goals that do not overwhelm or stress you out.
  • Focus on quality time together rather than trying to do everything at every stop. Sometimes, simply being together and enjoying each other's company is the most important goal.
  • Encourage mindfulness and staying present in each moment. Appreciate the small things, like a beautiful sunset, a family meal, or a fun activity, without the pressure of ticking off every item on a checklist.

Reflect Together:

  • After sharing and working towards your goals, reflect on what you learned about setting and achieving goals. Discuss how the strategies you used can be applied to other areas of life.
  • Encourage each other to use the strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking skills from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, and impulsivity management from Competency 5 to achieve future goals.
  • Reflect on the importance of balance, rest, and quality time together during holidays.

Tips:

  • Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere during goal-setting discussions and activities.
  • Be open to feedback and suggestions from others.
  • Celebrate each other’s progress and efforts in achieving goals.

Benefits:

  • Promotes mutual understanding and support.
  • Enhances group cohesion and collaboration.
  • Strengthens relationships through shared learning and growth.
