Competency 7 - Responsible Choice-Making

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Cognitive Competencies: Constructive Decision-Making

Specific Competency: Responsible choice-making - Making informed and responsible decisions.

Statement: Responsible choice-making involves evaluating options, considering potential outcomes, and making informed decisions that are ethical and beneficial to yourself and others. This competency helps you navigate complex situations with confidence and integrity.

Part A: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop responsible choice-making by evaluating options and making informed decisions.

Instructions:

A) Start by Yourself:

  • Take a moment in silence with a pen and paper. Reflect on a recent decision you had to make. What were the options available to you? How did you evaluate them?
  • Write down the decision-making process, including the pros and cons of each option and the factors you considered.
  • Reflect on how your strengths from Competency 1 (Self-Knowledge), critical thinking skills from Competency 2 (Critical Thinking), positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, impulsivity management from Competency 5, and goal achievement skills from Competency 6 can support responsible choice-making.

B) Take It Further:

  • Practice decision-making exercises. Consider hypothetical scenarios and think through the choices you would make. Evaluate the potential outcomes and ethical considerations.
  • Use a journal to document your decisions, the reasoning behind them, and the results. Reflect on what you learn from each decision-making experience.

Tips:

  • Take your time when making decisions. Avoid rushing and consider all relevant factors.
  • Seek advice from trusted sources if you are unsure about a decision.
  • Use your identified strengths to support your decision-making process.

Benefits:

  • Enhances confidence in your ability to make informed decisions.
  • Reduces the likelihood of regrettable choices.
  • Encourages ethical and responsible behaviour.

Part B: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop responsible choice-making skills together by evaluating options and making informed decisions as a group.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Gather with your partner, family, or friends. Each person should share a recent decision they had to make or an upcoming important decision. Discuss the options available, the factors considered, and the potential outcomes.
  • Offer feedback and suggestions to each other on the decision-making process. Use your strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, impulsivity management from Competency 5, and goal achievement skills from Competency 6 to support each other's decision-making process.

B) Help Each Other:

  • Use the time together during the holidays to support a friend or family member in making an important decision for their future. The relaxed environment and strengthened bonds from working on previous competencies create the perfect conditions for constructive discussions.
  • Focus on being realistic and mindful. Help each other weigh the pros and cons, consider potential outcomes, and make decisions that enhance their lives without causing unnecessary stress or conflict.

Reflect Together:

  • After sharing and discussing your decisions, reflect on what you learned about responsible choice-making. Discuss how the strategies you used can be applied to other areas of life.
  • Encourage each other to use the strengths from Competency 1, critical thinking skills from Competency 2, positive self-evaluation from Competency 3, mindful awareness from Competency 4, impulsivity management from Competency 5, and goal achievement skills from Competency 6 to make informed and responsible decisions in the future.
  • Reflect on the importance of balance, rest, and quality time together during holidays.

Tips:

  • Foster a supportive and encouraging atmosphere during decision-making discussions and activities.
  • Be open to feedback and suggestions from others.
  • Celebrate each other’s progress and efforts in making responsible choices.

Benefits:
