Psychosocial Competency 1 - Self-Knowledge

Transforming Conflict into Growth:

Cognitive Competencies: Self-Awareness

Specific Competence: Self-knowledge (strengths, goals, values)

Statement: Self-knowledge involves understanding and identifying your strengths, goals, and values. For example, identifying your strengths through feedback or self-assessment tools.

Part 1: Start By Yourself

Objective: Develop self-knowledge by identifying and celebrating your strengths.

Instructions:

A) Start by Yourself:

  • Take a moment in silence, perhaps with a pen and paper. Reflect on a strength of yours, a quality that you possess. Are you fun, are you rigorous, are you thorough?
  • Write down your strength and think about how it helps you in your daily life.

B) Take It Further:

  • If you wish to explore your strengths more deeply, reach out and or take the VIA Strengths test at VIA Character.

Tips:

  • Reflect on how your strengths can help you achieve your personal goals and positively impact your surroundings.
  • Regularly review and update your goals to ensure they align with your values and strengths.

Benefits:

  • Encourages self-awareness and positive self-evaluation.
  • Helps in setting and achieving personal goals.
  • Provides a foundation for better handling life's challenges.

Part 2: Share with Pairs, Family, or Friends

Objective: Develop self-knowledge by identifying and celebrating strengths together.

Instructions:

A) In Pairs or Groups:

  • Sit together with a family member, friend, or a small group. Take turns sharing a strength you believe you possess.
  • Discuss how this strength helps you in daily life. For example, "I think I am thorough. This helps me stay organised and ensures I complete tasks well."

B) Reflect Together:

  • After sharing, provide positive feedback to each other. Discuss how you see this strength in the other person and how it impacts their life positively.
  • Encourage each other to take the VIA Strengths test at VIA Character to further explore and validate strengths.

Tips:

  • Be honest and supportive in your discussions.
  • Celebrate each other's strengths and encourage ongoing self-reflection and growth.

Benefits:

  • Enhances mutual understanding and support.
  • Promotes a positive and encouraging environment.
  • Strengthens relationships through shared self-awareness and growth.
